My husband and I have connections with a social service agency in Des
Moines that assists people with mental and behavioral challenges. They
have recently taken on about 50 clients living in both group homes and

Go on a mission trip to Africa - and never leave home!
Reach out to Africa right here in Des Moines as you follow Christ's command to "welcome the stranger." Lutheran Services in Iowa has created "Circle of Friends" to link local volunteers with newly arriving refugee families - mostly from Africa. Volunteers form a small group "Circle" to provide an individual family with orientation to home, culture, and community life as they rebuild their lives in Iowa. Orientation and training will be held Monday, Dec. 3 from 6:00-9:00 pm at Refugee Cooperative Services, 3200 University Ave, Des Moines. For information or to register contact Jane Scanlon at jdscanlon@aol.com or 991-7412.

In the Waukee area. The time needed is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, 11:00 am - noon. You would be delivering meals to people just in the Waukee area. If you are interested please contact Rose, the coordinator, at 993-5175.

Donate soccer equipment (soccer shoes, socks, shin guards, and/or soccer balls) that would fit 6th - 8th grade students at Callahan Middle School. These students are from Africa, Central and South America. These students are learning to speak, read and write a new language. So many things are new as they acclimate to American culture, and they now have the opportunity to participate in a sport that they understand and know. You can help by donating new or gently used equipment. Contact their ESL teacher, Kathryn Haun, at 515-250-2267 or kathryn.haun@dmps.k12.ia.us

Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS) is a non-profit organization founded in 1993 and located in Ames, Iowa. Its mission is to promote international education, development, and peace through rural initiatives. IRIS conducts many grant programs which bring students, journalists, business people, educators, and government leaders from Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia to Iowa. While in Iowa, the international participants stay with Iowa families, study in Iowa schools, intern in Iowa businesses, and become involved in community activities. When they return to their home countries, they take with them new ideas and strategies for economic development and peace advancement. They also return with new friendships and a better understanding of Americans and our democratic way of life. IRIS also links Iowans to the world by facilitating international relationships and arranging for travel opportunities for Iowans. More information is available about volunteering and serving at
www.iris-center.org

The organization hopes to have students placed in Iowa homes before the end of May. Contact Del Christensen at 515-292-7103 (office), 515-971-0953 (cell) or del@iris-center.org
